9 Questions Atheists Should Not Ask Believers (And Why) – WTF?

The religidiots of Tumblr are at it again…wtf? We’re going to ask them whatever the fuck we want to ask them.

reNine Questions Atheists Should Not Ask Believers (And Why)

(Because I’m inspired by the article)

1. Why don’t you just believe in Science?

We do.  The idea that science is a monolithic force in opposition to religion is every bit as ignorant as the idea that all religious people are equivalent, or all religions believe the same things.  This question is simply another way of stating the claim that religious people are less intelligent or logical than a non-religious person.  So… yes.  It’s offensive.

And science is not in-and-of-itself sufficient to provide morality, purpose, and direction for one’s life.  Not even an atheistic life.  You might believe in the pursuit of knowledge, but that’s an entirely separate thought from PRACTICING science, or ACCEPTING scientific theories.  Science is an ideologically neutral subject that provides direction on how to investigate the world. One cannot worship or have faith in science any more than they can base their morality on a guide to cooking.

2. Why do you have to believe in God?

Just to give atheists someone to argue with.  You’re welcome.

There are plenty of philosophical reasons why someone might come to the conclusion that God exists.  If you don’t understand those reasons, then I can suggest several great books.  It’s offensive because it assumes that believers have no reason for their beliefs and have not given them any thought.

3. If Heaven is real, why don’t you kill yourself?

The value of life and avoidance of sin and whatnot, the fact that we’re not suicidal, life being too short and too wonderful… all likely similar to the reasons atheists might give for not killing themselves(other than sin).  It’s almost as if most people are not that different from each other!

4. Who created God?

This is a misunderstanding of the contingency argument.  It’s asked either because 1. You’re an amateur “philosopher” who doesn’t understand why asking this question is absurd and offensive to people who actually study philosophy, or 2. You’re asking someone who doesn’t know philosophy solely to confuse them and make them feel stupid without having a good argument of your own.

Either way, you’re being a jerk when you ask this.  Or expressing ignorance, which is not so bad, if you admit that’s what you’re doing.

5. Have you read the ENTIRE bible/other holy book?

For one thing, most people would not define a Christian/member of any religion as “someone who has read X book.”- so the question has no philosophical relevance nor does it imply that the person not a member of X religion.  For another, reading a book has nothing to do with understanding said book.  Many atheists are good examples of that fact.

If the point of asking is to argue about how many people died/rape accusations/genocide/other horrors(which it usually is), then it’s an argument by outrage/appeal to emotion:  A logical fallacy that has nothing to do with whether the religion in question is true or not.  And arguments by outrage are inherently offensive- they are intended to be.

6. Why don’t you believe in Thor/Zeus/Mithra/Unicorns/The Flying Spaghetti Monster?

Can you give me a single reason why I should?  Do you know a proselytizer of Thor that I should really talk to?

If not, It’s a red herring logical fallacy to bring up unrelated ideas to distract from the primary subject: Is MY religion the true one, or is MY belief logically sound?  I don’t answer for anyone else’s, and logically, I don’t have to.  The question is designed to avoid actual debate while attempting to demonstrate the religious person ignorant for not having an argument against .

7. Why would a loving God send anyone to Hell?

Because universal love and universal acceptance are not necessarily the same thing.  Anyone with children could explain this concept: You love them, regardless of the unacceptable behavior they often demonstrate.  The real question is, when would you cut your children off from your life completely?  If they commit murder?  Rape?  Torture?  If they ask you to cut them off from your life completely?

Hell is better understood as a chosen separation from God.  But that aside, belief in Hell(and who goes there) has NOTHING to do with whether or not God is loving.  It’s an inadequate assumption of a particular(false) definition of love, and another sort of argument by outrage fallacy.

8.  If God exists, why is there evil?

If evil did not exist, then neither would God.  The idea of good and evil are moral judgments that would be meaningless in an atheistic universe.

But as an argument against the Christian God specifically?  The bible admits that there’s evil.  It does a pretty good of describing it explicitly(Pretty sure most other religions justify evil as well).  Personally, I think the question is ‘interesting’, but it’s also a philosophical one that’s older than dirt and written about just as much.  If you were really curious, you wouldn’t be asking me.  You’d read about it.

9. Why should blind faith be considered moral?

The Bible does not teach blind faith.  But if a particular religion did, on what basis would blind faith NOT be moral?  What is morality, and who decides that?

Beyond the fact that the question itself is logically absurd and poorly defined, it’s also an assumption that the believer is ignorant PURELY on the basis that they have belief.  That’s an ad hominem fallacy.  And is insulting and offensive.

All this said, the idea that a BELIEF should not be questioned- however offensively questioned- is utter nonsense.  Everyone has beliefs.  Everyone has questions about other people’s beliefs.  Some of those questions will be offensive, because many people are jerks.

Get over it.

Accomplishments Off The Backs of Others: Atheist Facebook Page Owners Who Are Intellectually Dishonest

I’m Proud to be an AtheistAtheists and Rational Thinkers, and Global Secular Humanism Movement are guilty of stealing the work of others. Removing links, cropping out logo‘s, or simply posting it and saying it was from a fan. When asked to give credit, people are then blocked or ignored altogether. We are supposed to be an example of good moral standing but when there are people like Edward, Waleed, and Faisal doing the very opposite of that, makes it harder for pages like mine and others to get the exposure we need.

When you find an image on Google and it has a trademark or logo from another source, it is not of sound morality to remove said logo or trademark and say you found it on Google that way. You give credit where it’s due.

aart

One owner has went as far as quoted from a famous atheist as if it came from off the top of his head. When confronted about said quote he claimed that a fan sent it. Well, who is this fan? Where did they get it from? Why didn’t you at least mention them? The logic behind “well, a fan sent it” I don’t seem to get. If they sent it, why can’t they site the source and then they can just implement it to whatever it is they’re posting?

gshm

They ‘like’ other atheist pages to steal content. Once something is posted, they immediately steal it and upload it – after removing logo’s, links as their own without giving a shred of accreditation. It’s usually within minutes of posting when they do their image robbing.

So I guess you’re wondering. “Well, they’re a part of the atheist movement, who cares if they steal an image or two?” It’s not just an image or two and this kind of dishonesty is to be expected of theists, not atheists. We are a people united and when there is a group of dishonest people among us, it is in our character to expose them for the lying thieves that they are.

“Atheists Shouldn’t Be Allowed to Marry”

wtflady

Why not? Same reason why gay people aren’t allowed to marry? To me, it seems one is more serious than the other. I don’t see rallies for people against atheists getting married. What’s the big deal? It’s not marriage is sacred or anything. Some believe that atheism contradicts marriage but I don’t see how that’s possible, either. I was married and those close to me knew I was an atheist so, either they didn’t care or they didn’t want to have their asses handed back to them if they mentioned the sanctity of marriage. The bible may this and you can say that – which is cute, by the way:

Y’all can believe anything you want, but marriage is a spiritual union which man has, over time caused to become a legal contract.
Genesis 2:24
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and they were not ashamed.

That was the first marriage ceremony.

But, the bible also says this:

Colossians 3:18-19

Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.  Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

-Scratches head- Now, I don’t see too many women submitting to their husbands; I mean only if they’re in to that kind of thing but the point is there’s a lot of shit in that damn book that most Christians do not follow. Why? Because they don’t know it’s there. Why? Because they don’t read the damned thing! Funny, that those who’s only rebuttal is citing Adam and Eve as the first wedding. That would mean that the first wedding was about 4,000 years after the Sumerians invented glue. Oh, here’s another one:

Hebrews 13:4-7

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.  Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”  So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”  Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.

The excuse? “The government took away the sanctity of marriage!” To me, the moment that happened, marriage was no longer sacred or should have been for one group-set.

There are so many bible verses that aren’t followed and yet when someone steps outside of what they consider normal, THEN they want to thump their bibles. Why bother? When marriage, of any kind, causes physical harm to you or anyone else, then that’s when you should open your mouth and say something. Not a moment before.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Guess what? You’re going to Hell!

Ha.

This looks like a bunch of he-said, she-said and someone just so happened to be there to write it down. Maybe.

Black Atheists Forum is Now Open!

I decided that sense Facebook tends to be discriminatory against atheists and favor those who are religious. I decided to open a forum for us to be able to post whatever and discuss whatever.

‘Black Atheists’ is Considered Segregation: O’RLY?!

blackathesits

I am the owner of this blog and it’s been 3 years since I started it, and when starting a blog like this brings along a lot of attention. It’s nothing that I cannot handle but there’s one thing that I must address. I am not segregating my race. I’ve been asked: “Why are you segregating a race and atheism?” 3 or so times on the Facebook page and once on here and it’s quite interesting. I have addressed this question before but it’s not doing any justice if it’s being drowned by the many posts on the Facebook page.

No way am I being racists or dividing atheism. Those who’ve asked this should try to understand what I mean by Black Atheists. Black Atheists means that there are not that many of us; if it is, they’re not coming out about it. It’s so rare to find another Black atheist that some people feel alone; I know I did. Even though as a whole, atheists are minority, it’s even more so clear among the African American community.

Being a Christian in a Black family of Baptists may not be any more different from a white family but I believe that Blacks have more to lose. I’ve lost friends to coming out about their atheism. They came out to their family, their family went to church and told the congregation, the congregation then told everyone else, and then that person end up being killed, banished, or they could no longer associate themselves with me.

My brother came out to our family about his atheism and they gasped in terror and then told him that he needs to read the bible more. Told him, that if he doesn’t change his mind, that he’ll be doomed to a life of anguish and misfortunes. My brother has since then contemplated suicide, and alienated himself from the few friends he had. They didn’t understand, either. Black Atheists means that those who are able to, those who are strong enough to be, to accept themselves who they are, will know that they are not alone. There are more of us than first realized. Every so often I come across someone saying, “I thought I was the only one, I’ve felt so alone and none of my friends of family understand! They just tell me to go read the bible”. Black Atheists is around for that reason.

This page may say Black Atheists, but I’m not discriminatory towards anyone who wants to join or take part. This blog, the Facebook page exists to help those who need empowerment. To see it as anything other than that just tells me how small-minded a person can be.

We’ll never get past segregating one another if this continues!

All I have to say is it’s been here for a long time and as long as there are humans on this earth, history books in the schools, or someone who only see things in black and white, there will be segregation.

Let’s just put it this way, BET (Black Entertainment Television), NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), TheRoot.com, and the like; why do you think they exist? Just think about it and when you come up with an answer, leave a comment.
